A FORMER Newport
golf Clubhouse was
bulldozed after becom-
ing a target for vandals,
its owners said.
The former Tredegar Park
clubhouse was flattened last
week.
A spokesman for the own-
ers, the Llanover Estate, said
the building "was pulled
down because it was becom-
ing vandalised and was
becoming dangerous"
But Garry Brown, Plaid
Cymru councillor for the
Tredegar Park ward, said he
had hoped the site could have been saved as a community
facility- and he now fears
for its future.
Councillor Brown said that
the demolition " leaves it
open about what could go there".
He said: " residents should
be worried about what the land could be used for.
He added: "If you look at the area in Bassaleg there are not many
community facilities available and it's a pity

Newport county council couldn't look at it to see if it
could have been used as a community centre."
The Llanover Estate's
Spokesman said no decision
has as yet been made on its
future use.
The Tredegar Park Golf
Club moved to another area of Newport
almost two years
ago after reaching agree-
|
ment with the Llanover
Estate. The Club still retains
its Tredegar Park Name.
The land they previously
held on lease was at one time
believed to have been desig-
nated by the council for light
industrial use.
But in the 1996-20011 Unitary
Development Plan for
Newport the
area was desig-nated as special landscape
area.

As an SLA,
priority is given
to landscape conservation
which limits any develop-
ment to that essential in
rural areas.
The UDP says that such
areas " substantial urban
development will not be
appropriate, but rural devel-
opment will not be precluded
provided it is consistent with
other policies of the plan.
